The Kenya AIDS Watch Institute - Determined To Make a Difference

About KAWI

Among other objectives, KAWI:

  • Monitors, assesses and evaluates relevant information on HIV/AIDS programmes

  • Provides an open forum for HIV/AIDS-related scientific, economic and social discussions

  • Proposes, establishes, fosters and encourages community-based initiatives and programmes to effectively tackle the AIDS epidemic at all levels

  • Breaks communication and cultural barriers against the war on AIDS

OUR VISION

We envisage a turning point in the generation of information and its proper use in planning, evaluation and implementation of anti-HIV/AIDS policies. These policies will then offer relevant and meaningful solutions to the problems of effective control and reduction of the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in society by integrating, as part of our approach, a community-based and community-sensitive solution.

 SCOPE OF THE PROBLEM

INFECTED: 40 million Africans, 2.8 million Kenyans. DEAD: 17 million adult Africans, 3.7 million children and 1.4 million Kenyans. ORPHANED: 12 million children, 1.3 million in Kenya urgently requiring support and care.

THE 90:10 IMBALANCE

Ninety per cent of HIV-infected people live in developing countries but only 10% of global resources are available to them. Ten per cent of HIV infected people live in the developed world, where 90% of all global  health care resources and research  funds are spent.

OUR APPROACH

KAWI’s activities focus on HIV/AIDS-related problems identified by communities, NGOs, religious organizations, the private sector, research institutions and health care groups.
