OUR MOTTO

Every day, 700 Kenyans die of HIV/AIDS related diseases. AIDS is spreading rapidly. We join this war because "we are determined to make a difference."

A "Centre of Excellence"

At KAWI, we envisage a turning point in the generation of information and its proper use in planning, evaluation and implementation of anti-HIV/AIDS policies. These policies are geared to offer relevant and meaningful solutions to the problems of effective control and reduction of HIV/AIDS prevalence by integrating, as part of our approach, a community-based and community-sensitive solution.

As a corollary to this, KAWI envisions a fully cohesive approach to the war on HIV/AIDS by combining the resources of both home-based and expatriate Kenyan professionals, as well as Kenya's supporters in the ongoing war against the pandemic.

Kenya is amongst the African countries affected by the drain on its intellectual and academic resources occasioned by the flight of many qualified individuals in search of improved conditions: access to superior facilities, a broader spectrum of intellectual resources, and financial rewards. KAWI aims to attract this Kenyan diaspora back to the country by creating an environment compatible with their needs.

KAWI is in contact with this group and has effectively inspired many leading professional, intellectual and academic personalities to reconsider their positions vis a vis Kenya’s socio-economic development, with particular regard to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. As a result, some of these individuals have contributed their expertise to KAWI’s efforts, and continue to do so in a variety of ways.

Through this association, KAWI recognises their responsiveness to Kenya’s needs and intends to establish a “Centre of Excellence” where these and like-minded persons can pursue their objectives while advancing the nation’s aims.

The Centre aims to create a research friendly environment wherein financial and other resources are readily available. As a purely indigenous institution, the members would not only be free to research and publish their findings in their respective areas of expertise, but also own their intellectual property.

Our directors, members, consultants and affiliate partners are unified by a fervent commitment to Make a Difference. Our association with KAWI is predicated upon a genuine desire to contribute our talents and resources towards victory in the ongoing war against HIV/AIDS. We are united by a compelling vision and the present and future existence of KAWI is founded on this indomitable spirit.

This sense of dedication from a variety of quarters adds support to the plans by KAWI to establish a Centre of Excellence. By creating a research friendly environment wherein intellectual, financial and other resources are readily available, KAWI intends to attract expatriate Kenyan professionals back to their homeland where they can do the most good, and to provide Kenya-based personnel with adequate resources for their work.

As a purely indigenous institution, KAWI believes that the Centre of Excellence will allow  members the freedom to research and publish their findings in their respective areas of expertise, as well as allow them the copyright to their own intellectual property.
